Erie lives by the lake, and the lake sets the calendar. Summer is short, sweet and packed, with guarded beaches, festivals and sunsets. Fall brings the grape harvest and quiet beaches. Winter means lake-effect snow, hockey and holiday lights on the peninsula. Spring is for birders and baseball's home opener. Here's what to expect in each season, with the dates we could confirm.

North East Wine Fest

Held the last full weekend in September in downtown North East. In 2026, the 45th festival ran Sept 25–27. See Enjoy North East.

Harvest Wine Weekends

The Lake Erie Wine Country harvest weekends are Nov 6–8 and Nov 13–15, 2026, with food and wine pairings at participating wineries. Tickets are required.

Otters hockey

The Erie Otters play in the Ontario Hockey League, and the season runs from fall through March, with home games at Erie Insurance Arena downtown. The 2026–27 schedule includes a game on Thanksgiving Eve.

Fall on Presque Isle

Fall is a beautiful, quiet time on the peninsula, with fewer people, changing leaves and migrating birds. The beaches aren't guarded after the summer season, so enjoy the views and the walks rather than swimming.

03Winter: snow, lights and indoor fun

Lake-effect snow

Erie is one of the snowiest cities in the country. Cold air crossing the open lake can create intense bands of lake-effect snow that drop a lot of snow in a short time. Check the forecast and road conditions before you drive, and pack for real winter weather.

Downtown d'Lights

Downtown Erie kicks off the holidays at Perry Square on Fri, Nov 20, 2026, from 5 PM. See VisitErie for details.

Presque Isle Lights

A drive-through holiday light display in the state park on Fridays to Sundays, Nov 27 to Dec 27, 2026, closed Dec 25. This year's route is shorter, turning around at the Duck Pond crossover. See the Presque Isle Partnership.

Winter Wonderland at Asbury Woods

Asbury Woods hosts an evening winter walk on select December nights. Check its program calendar for dates and tickets.

Splash Lagoon

The indoor waterpark resort Splash Lagoon is open year-round, and it's especially popular in winter.

Winter on the peninsula

When conditions allow, Presque Isle is good for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and ice fishing on the bay. Check the park for current conditions.

Check before you goNever go onto the ice without current local information. Ice conditions on the bay and the lake change constantly and can be dangerous.

04Spring: birds and baseball

Bird migration

Presque Isle is one of the best birding spots in Pennsylvania, especially during spring migration, when birds rest on the peninsula after crossing the lake. Gull Point is a favorite, though parts close seasonally to protect nesting birds.

Erie Zoo opens

The Erie Zoo has typically been open from March 1 to Nov 30.

SeaWolves home opener

The Erie SeaWolves, Double-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, open their 2027 home season on Tue, Apr 6, 2027, against the Harrisburg Senators. The 2027 schedule has 69 home games, including two series against the Altoona Curve (June 15–20 and Aug 17–22).

Waldameer opens

Waldameer Park & Water World usually opens in early May. In 2026, Waldameer opened May 2 and Water World on May 23, both on weekends at first.

05Summer: beaches and festivals

Beach season

Presque Isle's beaches are usually guarded from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, generally noon to 7:30 PM. See the swimming page and our Presque Isle guide.

Discover Presque Isle

A week of mostly free events in the park during the last week of July. In 2026, it ran July 20–26, with a giant beach bonfire, a craft fair, sand sculpting and kite flying. See the Presque Isle Partnership.

CelebrateErie

A free three-day downtown festival, formerly We Love Erie Days, which began in 1976. In 2026, it ran Aug 14–16. See CelebrateErie.

Waldameer in summer

In summer 2026, Waldameer ran daily except Wednesdays, with the season ending on Labor Day.

Summer on the bayfront

Long evenings on the bayfront, with sunset dinners, the Bicentennial Tower open until 9 PM daily in summer and boats coming and going.

06Weather to expect

Lake Erie shapes Erie's weather all year. In summer, the lake breeze can keep the shoreline a little cooler than inland areas, and evenings on the bayfront can feel chilly. In fall, the warm lake can delay the first hard frost near the shore, which is one reason grapes grow so well in the region. In winter, cold air passing over the open lake creates lake-effect snow, which can be heavy and very localized: it may be snowing hard on one side of town and sunny on the other. In spring, the cold lake keeps the shoreline cool, so pack layers even in May.

08What to pack

  • Summer: sunscreen, bug spray, swimwear and a light jacket for cool evenings by the lake.
  • Fall: layers and a windproof jacket.
  • Winter: a warm coat, boots, a hat and gloves, plus a snow brush and an emergency kit if you're driving.
  • Spring: layers and waterproof shoes. Spring weather near the lake is changeable.

09Busy times versus quiet times

Summer weekends, especially in July and August, are the busiest and most expensive time in Erie. If you'd like lower rates and fewer crowds, try late May, June weekdays or September, when the lake is still warm-ish and the beaches are quiet. Winter is the quietest season, except for holiday weekends and big hockey games.
