Bayfront patios and rooftops, Erie's own hot dogs and chocolates, a restaurant in an old firehouse, breweries and the seasonal beach stand at the park entrance.
Eating in Erie means eating by the water whenever you can. In summer, the bayfront's patios and rooftops fill up at sunset, and a stop at the beach stand by the Presque Isle entrance is practically required. The city also has its own local favorites: hot dogs made in Erie, chocolates from a family candy maker, fresh lake perch, and a growing list of breweries. And with wine country half an hour away, a local bottle is easy to find. This guide covers the waterfront first, then the classics and breweries.
Check before you goRestaurant hours change often, and many waterfront places have seasonal hours or close for part of the year. We link to each restaurant's own website. Check before you go, and call ahead on summer weekends and event nights.

The bayfront, at the foot of State Street and along the piers, is Erie's busiest dining area in summer. Most places have outdoor seating with views across Presque Isle Bay to the peninsula.

Local tipFor a sunset dinner on the bayfront in summer, book ahead or arrive early. Rooftop and patio tables go first, and they close in bad weather.
Just outside the park entrance at 25 Peninsula Drive, Sara's is a seasonal Erie tradition for hot dogs, burgers, fries, milkshakes and ice cream before or after the beach. Its website says it's closed for the 2026 season and plans to open April 1, 2027.
Smith Provision Company makes hot dogs and other meats in Erie, and Smith's hot dogs are a local favorite. You'll find them at stands, ballparks, grocery stores and backyard cookouts all over the region. Locals have strong opinions on toppings.
Romolo Chocolates is a family chocolate maker in Erie, and a box of its chocolates is a classic Erie gift. Stop by for boxed chocolates and seasonal treats.
The lake is famous for yellow perch and walleye, and you'll see both on menus all over the city, usually fried or broiled. In Lent, fish fries pop up at churches, fire halls and restaurants.
Check before you goFish availability depends on the season and the catch. Ask whether the fish is local if that matters to you.

Erie has many more breweries, cideries and distilleries in the city and county. Check the VisitErie breweries list for more.
Lake Erie Wine Country starts about 30 minutes east of the city, around North East. The region is known for grapes, and many wineries make sweet wines from native varieties like Concord and Niagara, along with drier wines. Read our wine country guide.

Erie is an easy city for family meals. Beach picnics at Presque Isle are a classic, and the park's pavilions and picnic areas make it simple. The ballpark and the amusement park have plenty of kid-friendly food, and many bayfront restaurants have kids' menus; Bay House and Pier 6 Rooftop list one on their website. For dessert, ice cream stands along Peninsula Drive are a summer ritual.
From late fall to spring, the beach stands close and some waterfront restaurants shorten their hours or close for the season. Downtown and Upper Peach Street restaurants stay open year-round, and a cozy taproom or a hot meal before an Otters game at Erie Insurance Arena is a fine way to spend a snowy evening. Always check hours before you go in winter, and allow extra driving time if lake-effect snow is in the forecast.
Presque Isle is a day-use park with picnic areas and pavilions across the peninsula, but few places to buy food once you're inside. Stock up before you go: grocery stores and delis on the west side and along Peninsula Drive are the easiest stops. Bring plenty of water in summer, a cooler with ice and a bag for your trash, since keeping the beaches clean is up to every visitor.
