Erie is spread out along the lake, and where you stay shapes your whole trip. Bayfront hotels put you on the water downtown, near the Bicentennial Tower, the Maritime Museum and the restaurants on the piers. Peninsula Drive puts you minutes from the beaches of Presque Isle and the rides at Waldameer. Upper Peach Street, near I-90, has dozens of chain hotels and an indoor waterpark resort. This guide compares the areas, names the hotels that stand out and shares tips for summer weekends, when the city fills up.

Drive times are rough estimates without traffic.

Erie's bayfront has been transformed over the past few decades, with a convention center, hotels, a marina, restaurants on the piers and the Bicentennial Tower at the foot of State Street. It's the best base for visitors who want to be on the water and walk to dinner.
The Sheraton Erie Bayfront Hotel is next to the Bayfront Convention Center, with views over Presque Isle Bay, an on-site spa and a restaurant on the water.
The Courtyard Erie Bayfront sits on Sassafras Pier, steps from waterfront restaurants and an easy walk to Dobbins Landing and the tower.
The Hampton Inn & Suites Erie/Bayfront is on East Front Street, near the Erie Maritime Museum and the U.S. Brig Niagara.
Local tipAsk for a bay-view room. Watching the sun set over Presque Isle from your window is one of the best parts of a bayfront stay.
Downtown Erie sits just up the hill from the bayfront along State Street. It's home to UPMC Park, where the SeaWolves play baseball, Erie Insurance Arena, where the Otters play hockey, the Warner Theatre and a growing restaurant scene around Perry Square. If you're coming for a game or a show, a downtown or bayfront hotel lets you walk.
Peninsula Drive runs north from the west side of the city to the park entrance. Along the way, you'll find Waldameer Park & Water World, the Tom Ridge Environmental Center, ice cream stands, bike rentals and a mix of motels, inns and condos.
This area is perfect for beach vacations. You can be on the sand within minutes and avoid the summer traffic into the park. Many places here are independently owned, so read recent reviews and check the location on a map.
Check before you goPresque Isle is a day-use park, so there are no hotels or campgrounds on the peninsula itself. Lodging "at Presque Isle" means nearby, on or off Peninsula Drive.
The area around Peach Street near I-90 is Erie's main shopping and chain-hotel district, with dozens of hotels, a mall and many restaurants. It's convenient if you're driving through on I-90 or I-79, and it often has rooms when the bayfront is full.
Splash Lagoon is an indoor waterpark resort in this area, open year-round. It's a favorite with families, especially in winter, when the beaches are closed. Check the website for the current partner hotels and packages.
Rentals make sense for groups, families and longer stays. Popular areas include the streets near Peninsula Drive and the lakeside neighborhoods east and west of the city.
There's no camping on Presque Isle itself, but there are private campgrounds and RV parks around Erie County. Check each campground's website for sites, seasons and rules. For a quieter day outdoors west of the city, Erie Bluffs State Park has trails along the lake bluffs.
Stay on Peninsula Drive. Spend Saturday at the beach and biking Presque Isle, and Sunday at Waldameer or on the water. Have dinner on the bayfront one night.
Stay on the bayfront. Climb the Bicentennial Tower, visit the Maritime Museum and the Niagara, catch a SeaWolves game, and spend a day in wine country.
Stay at or near Splash Lagoon, see the Presque Isle Lights, and catch an Otters game downtown.
These are the two areas most visitors weigh up, and the right choice depends on how you'll spend your days.
Pick the bayfront if you want to walk to dinner, see the city, visit the Maritime Museum and the Niagara, catch a game downtown or stay somewhere with full-service hotel amenities. You'll drive about 10 to 15 minutes to the park entrance, and you'll have the sunset over the bay from the piers.
Pick Peninsula Drive if your trip is mostly about the beach. You'll be minutes from the park entrance and Waldameer, you can bike into Presque Isle, and you'll avoid the slow line of cars heading into the park on summer weekends. Dinner on the bayfront is a short drive away.
Families with young kids often split the difference: a few nights near the park for beach days, then a night on the bayfront at the end of the trip.
Erie's attractions are spread out, so most visitors drive. Parking is easy at most hotels and attractions, though bayfront and downtown lots can be busy during big events and games. Rideshare is available in the city. If you fly into Erie International Airport (ERI), it's on the west side, close to Peninsula Drive.
